WHAT DID SHE SEE?

“Sniffy first man,” Sassy said.

That was interesting; who was the first man?

Lola took a sip of her coffee and noticed that the Frenchie had not left her side. If someone was crying or even just upset, Sassy would usually be comforting them. However, with the uptight solicitor, she was keeping well away. It could, of course, be that she knew the tears were false, but if that was the case, why hadn’t she gone sock hunting.

One of Sassy’s points of pride was that she tried to liberate a pair of socks from every house she visited. She also loved to investigate. There were so many new sniffys in every new place. However, at the moment, she was sticking close to Lola’s side.

Lola pulled her mind back to Amanda, who was currently patting at her non-existent tears. “I understand how upsetting this must be. Did you recognize the person that was attacking Theodore?”

Amanda made it very obvious that she knew but didn’t want to say. There was nothing subtle about this at all. “I was on the pavement, I couldn’t… well, you know how it is. I could not be 100% sure.”

Lola could understand. Amanda had never been exposed to something this awful, and her mind had pushed it to one side. She wanted to avoid it but no doubt couldn’t. Talking would help, but she didn’t know that. Lola would be careful; the last thing she wanted was to worsen Amanda’s trauma. Despite her reputation as a rough and cut-throat solicitor, this was different… or was it? Was this real emotion?

Sassy scratched her leg again. “Pants going to burn the house down,” Sassy said with a massive grin on her face. Lola couldn’t help but chuckle at the extravagant language and the vitriol she was feeling at not getting a treat; luckily, she managed to do it while looking down at the Frenchie.

Clearing her throat to hide her chuckle, Lola took another sip of the coffee. She would ease the information out of Amanda for now. The solicitor was known for her diligence, attention to detail, and cutthroat actions. She knew more than she was saying. “Could you tell whether it was as a man or a woman?”

Amanda looked down and clutched her hands in front of her as if she was nervous. Then, she looked back up and swallowed. “It was a woman.”

“There, we are getting somewhere.” Lola was encouraged, but part of her wanted to stop, for she knew what was coming. She would gradually tease the details out of Amanda, and they would match Rowena. Yet every nerve in Lola’s body told her that Rowena was innocent. That would make this a lie. But if it was a lie, what was the reason? What did Amanda have to gain if Rowena murdered her husband?

It made no sense. Amanda and Theodore couldn’t ride off into the future if he was dead. Sure, it would get Rowena out of the way, but she would be released if Theodore ever resurfaced.
